Seven students charged with arson following school riot

Seven students from Embu High School were on Tuesday arraigned in an Embu Court to face arson charges following the torching of two classrooms and dormitory during riots in the school.

The students were however not allowed to take a plea as the investigation officer asked for more time to conclude investigations into the incident.

Through a sworn affidavit, Police Constable Paul Irungu asked the court for more time to carry out investigations while holding the seven suspects at the Embu Police Station.

The seven, who included Evans Karanu Mbugua, Laban Wakobi, Muchiri, Osteen Maina Kigege, Kelvin Muthomi Muriungi, Kenneth Kariuki Njogu, Michael Kimanthi Nyaga and Idd Lukume were arrested after students in the school went on a rampage protesting the food ratio offered to them and torched the three buildings.

Police officers led by the Embu West Criminal Investigating Officer Joshua Cheptoo rushed to the school where they arrested the seven students and a watchman who is helping police with investigations.

The court granted the application and the students were sent to Embu Police Station where they will be held until July 26, 2016.
