Death strikes as seven students killed in dawn school fire

Moi Girls

Seven students of Moi Girls High School in Kibra, Nairobi have died after their dormitory was razed early today.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i who visited the school says that following the 2am incident,  10 other students have been injured and are admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital and Nairobi Women’s Hospital.

It is reported that the dormitory hosting Form one students caught fire at around 2 am, an incident that saw property worth millions of shillings reduced to ashes and lives lost.

According to Kibra Administration Police boss, Enos Maloba, tens of students suffered suffocation from the smoke and fainted but were rushed to nearby health facilities for medical attention.

Maloba strongly believes that the cause of the fire was an electric fault adding that a team of experts has been dispatched to the school to investigate the matter.

CS Matiang’i also says President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed all government investigative agencies to probe the matter and submit a report on the cause of the inferno by the end of Saturday 2nd September, 2017.

“We don’t want this to be one of those cases we say we will investigate and we will tell you. We have decided we will do all the investigation now.” Said Matiang’i

“We have invites everyone who needs to be here and have cordoned off the dormitory that that burned. We are not going to wait till tomorrow.” he added

Matiang’i, who was accompanied by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has also condoled with the parents of the deceased students further announcing that the school will close for two weeks.

Matiang’i however indicated that Form Four candidates will be allowed to return to the school on Friday to prepare for the KCSE examinations.

“We will do whatever it takes to support you as you prepare for your exams,” Matiang’i assured the candidates.
