In 2016, over nine thousand cases of teenage pregnancies were reported in Busia county, accounting for the highest percentage of underage girls impregnated nationally. While several factors have been blamed for the high numbers in the region, it has also emerged that men in the area continue to take advantage of desperate female students, exploiting them sexually before providing money for their basic needs, among them, sanitary towels.
