SGR compensations: Rongai residents vacate homes

Families in Rongai, Kajiado County affected by the ongoing construction of the phase two of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) are in a race against time to vacate the area.

This was after the payment of land owners displaced by the construction of the phase 2 of the SGR line to Naivasha resumed on Monday.

The National Land Commission now affirming that the construction can now proceed without hitch.

“Yes there was a challenge but the contractor has assured us that the project will be delivered without delay,” said Abigail Mbagaya, the acting chairperson at the NLC.

With the money in bank, land owners have begun vacating the marked areas to pave way for the construction.

The deadline to vacate set for Thursday January 10, 2018.

What was once a quiet residential area has now turned into an active construction area.

The government released Ksh.7.9 billion to compensate the land owners October last year.

But while all seems to be smooth, some households are still held back by internal issues.

In September last year, land owners in Kajiado blocked the construction of the railway for over two months demanding compensation.

The 120km Nairobi-Naivasha line is being constructed at a cost of Ksh.150 billion.
