Sh7.1B water project launched in Ugenya

Over 7,000 residents of West Ugenya Ward are set to benefit from a Ksh7.1 billion water project courtesy of the Government of Japan.

Speaking during the handing over of the water supply project in Karadolo West, the Minister Counsellor of Embassy of Japan in Kenya, Mr Yoshihiro Katayama, the residents will also benefit from the construction of five water kiosks, three toilet blocks and a water tank.

The 6.5 km piped water project coming from the Mauna dam will also ensure improved access of water within the community.

While emphasising the importance of clean water, Katayama called on the community to take up the responsibility of ensuring the maintenance of the water project so that it can be beneficial to the community for generations to come.

Also present during the commissioning was Siaya County Governor Cornel Rasanga who said that as a government the provision of water to households is at the core of their county government integrated development plan.

He revealed that his government has spent over Ksh500 million since its inception in 2013 to bridge the gap of clean water supply.

He pointed out that during this period, the county government has done 65 water pans, 28 boreholes and several wells, and has done about 80km of water pipeline extensions across the county.

The governor assured the Japan Embassy that his government would seek to ensure proper maintenance of the project so that it can continue serving the people.
