Sheikh Idris Shot Dead In Likoni
The cleric, who was the Chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya, was shot dead by a group of gunmen on Tuesday morning outside his Likoni home.
One of the relatives Hassan Mohammed Idris says the deceased was shot at 5 am in his stomach by unknown assailants
He says the late Idris succumbed to injuries while being rushed to a private hospital.
Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa condemned the perpetrators of the heinious act and said police were probing the killing
The Council of Imams led by its treasurer Hassan Omar also condemed the killing of their colleague and called for peace in Mombasa.
His body has been moved to Pandya Memorial Hospital.
Reports indicate that the muslim cleric had earlier expressed fears over his life after he received death threats from radical youths.
The Imam is survived by 25 children.
The body of the 64 years old cleric will be laid to rest at Kikowani Muslim cemetery in Mombasa island this afternoon.
He becomes the latest cleric to be shot dead after that of fiery cleric Aboud Rogo and Sharif Makaburi.
