Shock as 11-year-old boy commits suicide in church

Residents of a village in Rarieda, Siaya County are still reeling left in shock after an 11-year-old boy committed suicide at a church compound.

The body of Ibrahim Odhiambo Opiyo, who was in Class Four, was found dangling from a tree in the compound of a church situated 400 metres from Kawamang’aria Primary School where he was studying.

According to the school’s headteacher, Mrs. Everline Abong’o, the body of the boy who was still dressed in school uniform was discovered by a passer-by with a rope round his neck.

Mrs. Abong’o, who described the boy as a jovial and humble pupil, said the pupil had left home for school only for him to be found dead several hours later.

Speaking to Radio Ramogi, the headteacher said the reason behind the suicide is still unclear as he did not leave behind any suicide note.

The boy’s body was moved to Madiany Sub-county hospital mortuary as police kicked off investigations into the incident.
