Shock as bodies found in shallow mass grave in Mandera

Leaders from Mandera County have come out to strongly condemn alleged extrajudicial killings following the discovery of at least two mass graves containing several bodies in Lethe, Arabia ward in Mandera East Constituency.

The leaders led by Mandera Senator Billow Kerrow and Mandera West MP Mohamed Mahamud alleged that military officers operating in the area are behind extra judicial killings in the area, adding that eight people from the area are still missing.

While addressing the media at Parliament buildings, the MPs from Mandera County threatened to petition the United Nations and the International criminal Court over the matter if the president will not act on alleged recent cases of extra judicial killings in Northern Kenya.

The legislators further claimed that about 25 freshly dug graves were discovered.

Meanwhile, Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Sishia on Monday met with area leaders in a security meeting called to address the alleged cases of extra judicial killings in the area.

On Sunday residents in Mandera East discovered two shallow graves containing several bodies while searching for a missing mother of five, who they later found dead and buried in a shallow grave.

At least ten bodies were discovered at the village located a few kilometers from Kenya’s border with Somalia.

The discovery is only 2km from Arabiya, the place where a bus was ambushed last year and 30 people killed.

Residents have been warned against venturing into the bushes and thickets without police escort.
