Form Three student commits suicide at Butere Girls

A Form Three student has allegedly committed suicide at Butere Girls High School in Kakamega County.

Her body was found hanging in the dormitory on Friday morning.

Police have launched investigations into the incident with OCPD Boniface Lisiolo identifying the deceased as 17-year-old Elizabeth Musoi Muunya.

“The student was discovered in the dormitory on her knees hanging from one of the top beds with a tie around her neck,” he said.

According to the police boss, officers also found a suicide note allegedly written by the deceased.

It reads: “Forgive me my sister for what I have done. I want to join mum and dad in heaven because I cannot take being sent away from school.”

The OCPD said the letter has been taken for forensic investigations to determine if indeed it was the student who wrote it.

He added that the school principal Jeniffer Omondi was not aware of any discipline issue involving the girl.

Last year, reports of students committing suicide were rampant particularly after the national exam results were released.

On December 22, a student who sat for the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in Kisii allegedly committed suicide shortly after receiving his results.

The same day, a family in Kiserian, Kajiado County was thrown into mourning after their son reportedly committed suicide just moments before the KSCE results were released.

And in November, another Form Four student in Mombasa was reported to have committed suicide shortly after he completed his last KCSE exam paper.

It was the same story in Migori County in September as police launched investigations following the death of a Form Two student who was reported to have committed suicide in Nyangao village, Rongo.

Earlier in the year, police in Nyatike were called to probe the death of a Form Three student who allegedly committed suicide in class using a neck tie.
