Shock as Kenyan advertises graft in national newspaper

The country was treated to a rude shock on Friday, November 25, 2016 after a man suspected to be a conman urged Kenyans to join corruption cartels in order to win government tenders.

Through a classified in the Daily Nation newspaper, the East Africa’s largest newspaper by circulation, the man intimated that by one joining corruption cartels, they would win government tenders without breaking a sweat.

“JOIN corruption cartels and win government supply tenders without sweat,” read the advert.

He further went on to give his mobile phone number, 072264***3, so that Kenyans can reach him to get help in winning the tenders.

Checking on phone number verification app, Truecaller, the number goes by the name INVEST 30K 10K M.

Efforts to reach the owner proved futile as calls were rejected.

The advert has attracted wide condemnation online with Kenyans accusing the Daily Nation of failing to adhere to ethical standards by authorising the publication.

It further points out to the gullible nature of Kenyans who are always looking for shortcuts to amass wealth.

This comes even as the country is fighting multi-billion shilling graft cases that have threatened to stagnate East Africa’s largest economy.

Among the graft cases that are under investigation include the National Youth Service scam where Ksh 1.6 billion was lost through dubious payments via the Integrated Financial Management system (IFMIS), the Afya House scam where it is alleged Ksh 5.1 billion was lost and Kilifi County scandal where Ksh 51 million was lost.

The ruling Jubilee administration and the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) have accused each other of propagating theft at both the county and national levels.
