Shun politics of threats and divisions, DP Ruto tells CORD

Deputy President William Ruto has called on Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leaders against engaging in politics of threats, hate and divisions.

Speaking in Machakos on Sunday, Ruto said there is need for a change in the way parties engage in their political affairs saying focus should be on promoting unity and making the country better.

“We want competition that is focused on uniting Kenyans and making the country better not one that focuses on promoting ethnic divisions and hate,” said the DP.

He also hit out at CORD leader Raila Odinga over his threat to hold protests to force the removal of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners from office the current setup calls of sobriety in handling such issues.

“I would like to challenge the opposition CORD to desist from politics of demonstrations and destruction of property because such politics does not have space in the current century,” he said.

The utterance was in response to Raila’s warning that he would call on his supporters to resume their protests against IEBC in a bid to force them out of office is they do not leave in one week’s time.

IEBC had been given a September 30th deadline to leave office, by the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee, and handover to a new commission.

The departure date has however changed following delays in reaching an agreement on the commissioners’ exit package and absence of a new commission in place.

Additionally, DP Ruto said that Jubilee is focused on uniting the country saying their move to dissolve Jubilee Coalition affiliate parties in favour of a single party was in the interest of Kenyans.

Ruto was accompanied by Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko, Kieni MP Kanini Kega, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, ten MPs from the Ukambani region and 25 MCAs.
