Siaya becomes the first County Assembly to pass BBI Bill

Siaya County Assembly has become the first to pass the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill, with the Speaker now set to forward the decision to Parliament.

The MCAs unanimously passed the BBI Bill after a lengthy deliberation on a report which was tabled on the floor of the House by Legal Affairs Committee Chairman Francis Otiato and seconded by Usonga Ward MCA Sylvester Madialo.

Speaking during the special sitting that was chaired by Speaker George Okode, the MCAs noted that there are numerous gains in the BBI report proposals.

They cited inclusivity, increase of allocation to the counties, enhancement of gender parity, enhancement of accountability in the Judiciary, opportunities for representation of women, youths and persons with disability as some of the gains.

Speaker Okode, while addressing the media after adjourning the session, stated that upon approval of the BBI Bill, 2020 he will now notify the Speakers of both the National Assembly and the Senate on the verdict of county assembly.

He stated that he will on Thursday submit a copy of the draft Bill and a certificate on the approval of the Bill and by extension the report of the county assembly’s Legal Affairs Committee report.

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga who attended the session lauded the County Assembly for its quick move to pass the Bill and urged others to follow suit.
