Siaya challenged to further Millennium Villages Projects

The County Government of Siaya has been advised to tap into the knowledge of development experts that were modeled by the Millennium Villages Projects in the region to enable realization of a smooth transition into Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Team leader and cluster Manager of the Sauri Millennium Villages Project in Gem sub-County Ms Jessica Masira on Saturday said that the county government should think of how best they can work with those experts to cascade their skills into larger programmes within the region.

Masira said that this will help in adopting the Sustainable Development Goals more smoothly as the world transits in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

She said that the transition from MDGs to SDGs should not bring an end the positive achievements that had already been made.

“We have transitioned most of health activities to the counties, for example that the Community Health Workers (CHWs) whose capacity has been built by the Millennium Villages Project, this should be absorbed by the county government,” she said

The Manager added that since the CHWs are well equipped with basic medical skills, they can be absorbed and well motivated to continue with the good work they have been doing during the Millennium Villages Project.

Speaking while addressing the public at Sagam Secondary School during the graduation of 42 infants who were enrolled under the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission, Masira further said that the programme is aimed at ensuring HIV positive mothers give birth to uninfected children.

She termed the programme as a success which needs to be continued by the county government to ensure a ‘HIV’ free society.
