Siaya County sets Ksh.170M for health cover plan

The Siaya County Government plans to get a health cover for vulnerable persons at an estimated cost of Ksh.170 million.

Reports indicate that Governor Cornel Rasanga has already allocated the funds that will cater for the elderly and those from disadvantaged families.

The acting County Executive Committee member for Health, Mary Omondi, revealed that the plan will be under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

“This is aimed at ensuring provision of access to quality healthcare services to the people of Siaya County irrespective of their economic status,” Mrs. Omondi said.

She was speaking during a health stakeholders meeting in Ugunja on Monday.

According to her, a majority of residents die of treatable illnesses because of lack of funds or access to better healthcare.

She reiterated that under this program, Siaya residents will be relieved of the high costs of treatment in hospitals.

Mrs. Omondi further disclosed that the initial funds will cater for the roll out phase in the next financial year 2018/2019.

After this, the program will be scaled up at least on a yearly basis, she said, adding that this will ensure provision of universal healthcare for Siaya County residents.

In February this year, NHIF chief executive Geoffrey Mwangi urged Governors to ensure that residents are registered for health cover and all hospitals get accreditation from them.

The package benefits from the Health Fund include inpatient, outpatient, maternity package, surgical package, radiology package, oncology, emergency evacuation, among others.
