Siaya County to sue police over shooting of anti-IEBC protesters

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga has threatened to sue the police over use of live bullets against anti-IEBC protesters in Siaya Town on Monday.

The Governor said that his County Government will do everything possible to ensure the government compensates the victims of police brutality.

“The police came to Siaya to protect the people and not to kill the people. We shall do everything possible to make ensure that the government compensates these people. We will hire competent lawyers to deal with the government because we are just not going to take it for granted,” said the Siaya Governor.

Rasanga was speaking during the launch of a nutrition programme, at Siaya County stadium, where he revealed that his government has already begun the process of hiring lawyers to deal with the issue.

Meanwhile, the management of Siaya County Assembly also plans to write a protest letter to the police over destruction of property.

“The Assembly has been extensively defiled by the actions of the Kenya Police. During the riots that took place on Monday, a number of live bullets were directed to the building. This put the Assembly staff to great risk. We, therefore, wish to condemn the actions of police and we are doing a complaint letter to the county commander and will give a copy to the Inspector General of police.”

Three people died and several others injured, after they were shot by police, in Siaya Town during the anti-IEBC protests on Monday.
