Siaya IDPs get Ksh 35 million as compensation

The National Treasury has disbursed Ksh 35 million to Siaya County to serve as reparations for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the region. This followed an appeal fronted by Siaya IDPs to their county assembly, asking them to formulate a legislation that will see them compensated.

The chairman of Nyanza IDPs Network, Mr. Nelson Owegi, confirmed that Treasury has released the first dispensation to Siaya County Commissioner’s office.

“This is only the first phase of the payment, we are expecting a second and third phase, which are currently being worked on,” Mr. Owegi said.

Further, Owegi reported that Siaya County has over 30,000 IDPs and pledged to follow the due process when distributing the money and that no ghost names will appear on the list.
