Siaya man attacked by a hippopotamus

A 43-year-old fisherman is nursing serious injuries after he was attacked by a hippopotamus on Sunday morning at Riskis Kogwari beach, Siaya County.

According to the area Beach Management Unit chairman Peter Ouma Wenwa, the hippopotamus chased Daniel Onyango Okelo as he was trying to swim to the lake shore. It attacked him, inflecting serious injuries before destroying the fishing boat.

The victim was rushed to Uyawi Health Center for medical treatment.

Mr. Ouma decried the increasing rate of hippo attacks in the region, urging the Kenya Wildlife Service to contain the situation.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the two fishermen who drowned in the lake near Kabarua beach in Mageta Island on Friday have been recovered.

According to the Chief of Mageta location Mr. Ambrose Ogema, the bodies were spotted by a woman who had gone to fetch water on Sunday morning.

Mr. Ogema who confirmed the incident and said the  police have retrieved the bodies and taken them to  Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary  a waiting autopsy.
