Siaya MCAs Threaten Demos Against IEBC over Mini Polls

Siaya Members of County Assembly have now given the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) a 14 day ultimatum to set a by-election date for North Ugenya ward in Ugenya constituency failure to which they will mobilize the residents to protest against the electoral body.

Led by Siaya Deputy Speaker Stephen Kadera, the MCAs questioned IEBC’s laxity in setting by-election date 90 days after the area ward representative Benson Omondi passed on.

The leaders further pointed out that this was unconstitutional since the law stipulates that this should be done within 60 days from the time of such death.

Kadera further added that since the County Assembly Speaker George Okode had already notified the electoral body of the vacancy at the assembly as required by law, it was therefore unfair for IEBC to keep the people of North Ugenya waiting and it was an infringement on their right to representation at the county assembly.

Kadera is now urging IEBC to move with speed and set the date adding that the laxity of the electoral body was denying the residence of North Ugenya very fundamental rights.

The North Ugenya ward seat fell vacant after the death of Benson Omondi who passed on in March, this year.
