Siaya residents decry substandard road repairs

Residents of Siaya County have expressed their discontent in the manner in which the Luanda-Siaya road is being re-carpeted.

Led by Rev Kenneth Wachianga of ACK Maseno West Diocese, the residents accused the contractor who is re-carpeting the road of doing substandard work.

They now want the government through the Ministry of Roads and Public Works to intervene and ensure the contractor does the work to the required standards before he is cleared for payment.

Rev Wachianga blamed politicians for the poor work that the contractor was doing on that road, further alleging that they have been protecting him for their personal gain.

“The contractor has been winning road construction tenders despite the improper job that he is doing. It is such a regret that politicians keep fighting for him,” alleged Rev Wachianga.

The clergyman lamented that the work that the contractor does is far below ideal standards, citing for example that their work cannot be compared with that of the contractor working on the Kisian-Kisumu road or the one working on the Siaya-Nyadorera-Rwambwa road.

Rev Wachianga advised the government to keep scrutinising road construction companies properly before awarding them tenders to ensure high standards of workmanship on Kenyan roads.

When reached for comment, the contractor and county officials declined to comment.
