Siaya retirees demand dues, threaten to demonstrate

Retirees of the defunct Local Authorities in Siaya have threatened to demonstrate against the county government over Sh28 million debts that have accrued over the last 15 years.

According to chairman of the retired workers’ association, Maurice Onyango, the Sh28 million is an accrued debt of salary arrears that has accumulated since the year 1999.

He said most of them retired while working with the county councils, town councils and the municipal councils that were all collapsed to form the current county government but their efforts to get payment have never born fruit.

Onyango told Radio Ramogi that they have been following the debts from January this year but the county government has been giving them empty promises.

The chairman who led the over 140 retirees to protest delayed payment of the arrears lamented that the County Secretary, Mr David Anyona, recently promised that the monies would be deposited into their accounts but to date nothing has been reflected.

They have threatened to storm the governor’s offices next week if the county government fails to release the funds.

Reacting on the matter, Mr Anyona maintained that the county government has no budgetary allocation to offset the retirees’ debts, noting that the retirees should remain calm as the issue is being sort.
