Siaya water company staff down tools over unpaid salaries

Workers of Siaya-Bondo Water and Sanitation Company (SIBO) have downed their tools citing salary arrears of up to Ksh5.1 million, which have accumulated over the last three months.

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, the secretary of the Kenya County Government Workers’ Union – SIBO Chapter, Mr Walter Omolo, said that the workers held a demonstration across Siaya Town due to the alleged delay of salaries and unexplained dismissal of employees.

“We are currently suffering to an extent that we cannot even afford daily meals, we will not return to work until they have been paid our salary arrears in full,” he said.

Mr Omolo stated that apart from delaying with the workers’ salaries, the management of SIBO has also failed to remit members’ union and Sacco contributions alongside welfare funds, which have accumulated to over Ksh2 million and Ksh1.2 million respectively.

On his part, SIBO Managing Director Mr Julius Nyadiango, however, downplayed the allegations and assured that the workers’ salary arrears will be settled in full before the end of next month.

Mr Nyadiango told Radio Ramogi that they are in talks with the workers’ union on the modalities of solving the matter, noting that they want it solved once and for all to avert the possible interruptions of water service provision.

The workers, who stormed the county’s department of water offices, also demanded an overhaul of the entire board of directors and management of SIBO, accusing them of embezzling funds.

They accused the management of running the company as a personal business and demanded that the managing director, Mr Julius Nyadiango, together with the board led by Prof Anga’wa Okere be sent home.
