Siaya youth threaten to disrupt ODM nominations

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominations scheduled to start on April 5, 2017 could be disrupted by youth in Siaya County who are demanding compensation for services offered at an earlier event held in the county.

The youth have threatened to interrupt the upcoming party nominations in the county saying they have not been paid for the ID and voters mobilization exercise they participated in last year.

The over 400 youth have accused the County Government of Siaya for failing to pay them over Ksh 4.5 million that was meant to cater for the exercise that went on for a month.

Speaking during a meeting held at a Siaya Hotel, Secretary of the Young ODM Democrat’s League, Ben Nyamulo, said participants were to receive between Ksh 500 and Ksh 1,000 per day for a period of one month, payments that have not been made until date.

In a letter to Governor Cornel Rasanga, the youth have given the County Government a 48-hour ultimatum to address their pay issue failure to which they will demonstrate to the Governor’s office.

According to Ugenya Constituency Youth Leader, Joseph Shikuku, Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officers and county government officials who worked during the process had received their dues.

Efforts to get a comment from the county government were futile as calls went unanswered.
