Six bodies of GSU officers killed in Naivasha crash identified

Six bodies of the victims of the gruesome Naivasha fire tragedy have been identified.

The six, identified as General Service Unit (GSU) officers, were reported to have been part of a group that had left the Nakuru Statehouse for a change of shift with their counterparts guarding the State House in Nairobi.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, the government will inform the next of kin of their demise immediately.

Speaking to Citizen Digital at Chiromo Mortuary on Sunday, Kenya Red Cross Society Secretary General Abbas Gullet said they have received 34 bodies so far, adding that some bodies would require DNA sampling to be identified as they had been burnt beyond recognition.

“We moved 34 bodies from the Naivasha General Hospital Mortuary to the Chiromo Mortuary to allow easy and faster identification,” he said.

Gullet expressed that the society is keen on ensuring the bodies are returned to their families as soon as possible.

Elsewhere, a family in Subukia, Nakuru County is mourning the deaths of two of their kin in the tragic road accident at Naivasha on Saturday night.

Joseph Kariuki Kamau told Citizen Digital that his sister was killed in the night inferno occasioned by a road accident after leaving his dowry celebrations.

“My sister, younger brother, his wife and my mother had just left my bride price ceremony and were headed back home to Kiambu. It was one ceremony we all laughed and made merry but I did not know that would be the end of them,” narrates Joseph.

According to Joseph, his brother claims to have tried opening the car door to free his mother, but failed to do so as the flames were overwhelming.

His mother has since been transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital to receive urgent treatment after sustaining serious burns.
