Six diagnosed with hepatitis E in Eldoret

Five students from Moi University’s main campus in Eldoret and one area resident have been diagnosed with Hepatitis E virus.

According to Uasin Gishu County Health Executive Dr Evans Kiprotich, the five students and one resident of Kesses area near the campus have been rushed to Mediheal Hospital in Eldoret for treatment.

Dr Kiprotich added that the sick students had previously been misdiagnosed with malaria.

This comes just a day after the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ Pharmacists and Dentists Union- KMPDU called on the national and county governments to embark on a nationwide vaccination drive for health workers against hepatitis A and B and influenza.

Speaking to the media in Nakuru, KMPDU National chairman Samuel Oroko claimed that so far at least two doctors in Mombasa have contracted hepatitis A while tending to patients.

Over 100 cases of the dangerous Hepatitis A have since been reported in Mombasa over the last one month, with the outbreak being blamed on contaminated water.

An Influenza outbreak in Nakuru which has killed 39 children has also been reported.

By last week, more than 282 suspected cases of influenza type A and B had been reported in Nakuru County since its outbreak last month.
