Six eye Wabukalas position as head of Anglican Church in Kenya

Six candidates have been nominated for the position of the 6th Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) and Bishop of All Saints’ Cathedral Diocese.

In a statement to newsrooms, the church clarified that its Executive of the Provincial Synod determined the nominations on Tuesday as it prepares to replace outgoing Archbishop Eliud Wabukala.

The candidates who have shown interest for the position include Rev Moses Masamba (Mbeere), James Ochiel (Southern Nyanza) and Rev Joel Waweru of Nairobi Diocese.

Among the nominated candidates also are: the Right Rev Lawrence Kavutsa (Malindi), Jackson Ole Sapit, (Kericho) and Julius Wanyoike of Thika Diocese.

On Sunday Mt Kenya South Bishop Timothy Ranji was forced out of the race over claims that he was not eligible to hold office due to his age.

According to the church’s constitution, an eligible candidate must be between 45 and 60 years of age.

Elections will be held on May 20th this year to replace Archbishop Wabukala, who has been at the helm of the church since 2009.

Wabukala is expected to preside over his last service as the head of ACK on April 17th at All Saints’ Cathedral.
