Six family members admitted after consuming poisonous traditional vegetable

Six members of one family have been admitted to the Siaya County Referral Hospital after they allegedly consumed a poisonous traditional vegetable in West Alego location, Alego/Usonga Sub-County last evening.

A 90-year-old grandfather, his two wives and their three grandchildren were rushed to the hospital with severe stomach pains after they allegedly consumed a ‘poisonous’ vegetable.

The grandfather, Gilbert Osore, his wives Leonora Osore and Lawrencia Osore and the three grandchildren are said to have eaten a mixture of some traditional vegetables before they began complaining of stomachaches.

According to the assistant chief of Komenya Kalaka Sub-Location, Mr Thomas Juma, this prompted neighbours from the adjacent homes to hurriedly rush them to the nearby Rabar dispensary.

He stated that they were then referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital where they are currently admitted as medics examine their situation.

Mr Juma, who confirmed the incident, revealed that samples of the mixed vegetable and ugali that the family had consumed have also been collected for testing by the government laboratory.

He took the opportunity to caution members of the public to be very careful with the foods that they eat especially traditional vegetables that they do not know well.
