Six gold miners buried alive in Migori

Six gold miners were Tuesday evening buried alive at Copper hill gold mine in Nyatike, Migori County, after the mine they were in collapsed.

The six trapped include Ominde Achineg aged 48, Ochieng Mwalimu, 37, Atineo Abongo, 26, Odhiambo Opiyo, 28, Isiah Otwera, 27 and Pascal Ochieng, 30.

Confirming the incident, area chief Chris Okelo said the miners were making their way out of the mine when the walls collapsed trapping them inside.

Mr. Okelo said by 9pm on Tuesday, it was not clear whether the six miners were alive or dead as they could not hear any voice coming from the mine.

He said they are yet to know what made the walls of the mine to crumble, adding hthat the incident could have been caused by the heavy rainfall experienced in the region.

The chief also noted that the heavy rocks in the mine were hampering efforts by the locals to rescue the victims, adding that an excavator would be required in the rescue mission.
