Six hospitalised after cholera outbreak in Embu

Six cases of cholera have so far been recorded in Embu County since the outbreak of the disease was reported one week ago.

According to the Embu County Public Health officer Rosaline Kaungi, the six patients were admitted at Embu Level Hospital.

Kaugi further indicated that three patients were treated and discharged while the other three — a secondary and primary school learner and a male adult from Kiajokoma in Embu North Sub-County — are still admitted at the hospital.

The public health officer added that the patients were isolated and immediate treatment was started.

Kaugi indicated that health officials from Embu County have embarked on sensitization programs in areas deemed prone to cholera so as to prevent it from spreading further.

She called upon school administrations to be cautious on their feeding programmes and ensure that the children wash their hands regularly.

The health officer further urged workers handling food in schools to be examined and cleared by the public health department as a preventive measure.

Residents have also been urged to take preventive measures including treating their water, cooking and washing food properly as well as properly washing their hands to avoid cases of Cholera.

Kaugi noted that the county health department is also conducting inspection of food joints which she says are among the primary sources of cholera.
