Six Kenyan fishermen are currently detained at Vuvumai in Uganda after they were arrested while on a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria.

According to Nyangwena Beach Management Unit Chairperson Zadock Meshak Kawa, the six fishermen; Jacob Ogweno, Nelly Ochieng, Michael Supi, Franckline Ochieng, Odhiambo Nyundo and Kosu Odira, were arrested by Ugandan authorities on August 23, 2018.

Mr. Kawa said the authorities also seized two boats as well as other personal effects belonging to the six fishermen.

He added that Kenyan fishermen have suffered in the hands of the Ugandan Authority, further calling on the Kenyan government to intervene and ensure the safe return of the fishermen.

Earlier last week Migori County Governor Okoth Obado blamed the national government of laxity in addressing the Migingo issue, leading to a lot of friction between Kenyan fishermen and authority with their Ugandan counterparts.

Governor Obado stated that, if he had the authority, he would have dealt with President Yoweri Museveni.

“If that was my function… the function of National Security… I would have kicked Museveni away long time ago and very fast. That guy is very notorious, each and every time harassing our fishermen and it is unfair,” said the Migori County boss.

“I’ve been to Migingo Island and all of us know that Migingo Island is right inside the Kenyan territory, so I ask the president to do his job by kicking that guy and his people away from our territory.”
