Six Maliera Boys Secondary School students charged with attempted arson

Six students of Maliera Boys Secondary School in Gem sub-county were on Wednesday charged with attempted arson at the Siaya Law Courts.

The six were charged that on July 16, 2018, they were found in possession of 24 litres of petrol and one litre of paraffin with intent to commit arson at the school.

Appearing before Siaya Principal Magistrate James Ong’ondo, the students pleaded not guilty to the charge and were each released on a bond of Ksh.50, 000 or a cash bail of Ksh.20, 000.

The Magistrate, however, directed the students to report to the nearest police station once a week upon their release.

The case has been scheduled for mentioning on August 3 while the hearing date of the case was slated for August 15 this year.

In a separate case, another seven students from the same school were also arraigned before the same court and charged with arson.

Also appearing before Magistrate Ong’ondo, the seven were charged that on July 4, 2018 they willfully and unlawfully set fire on Longonot and Elgon dormitories.

In a second count, they were also charged with the offence of malicious damage to property namely a CCTV camera valued at Ksh 8,000.

They also pleaded not guilty to the charges and were released on a cash bail of Ksh20, 000 each.

The case was slated for mention on July 27 and hearing on August 7, 2018.
