Six-week-old baby abandoned in Rongo

Police in Rongo are investigating an incident where a 6-week-old baby was found abandoned next to a rental house a few meters from Rongo Primary School in Migori County.

The infant was reportedly found at 4am by security guards who were patrolling the area Saturday night, and who later informed area residents.

An eyewitness, Irene Atieno, who was first to arrive at the scene, said the infant was well dressed and lying on the veranda about 30 meters from her house.

“I heard the baby crying earlier but I assumed it could be from my neighbour’s house,” said Atieno.

Atieno and her neighbours took the infant to Rongo Police Station to record a statement. She added that she wanted to take custody of the child but was asked to wait until due process is completed.

Confirming the incident, Rongo OCPD Kisaka Muganda said the infant was taken to New Hope Children’s Home in Kisumu for care and protection.

He said that police have launched investigation into the matter, while expressing optimism that the infant’s parents would be found and brought to book.

Kisaka further appealed to the public to come forward with any information regarding the infant or its parents to assist with the investigations.
