Slow down on Education reforms, Sossion tells Matiangi

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has asked Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to slow down on the education reforms he is introducing.

Speaking at Valley Teachers Training College in Litein, Bureti, Sossion told Matiang’i that education was a delicate sector that involves over 12,000,000 learners and the entire Kenyan population.

He accused the Education CS of announcing the reforms without consulting relevant stakeholders, adding that the union will not accept the changes.

He took issue with the recent ban of social activities in secondary schools in 3rd term saying the move will not curb the exam cheating menace since parents were not the ones involved in the examination cheating.

Sossion further challenged Matiang’i to reveal the real culprits who were involved in exam cheating.

The KNUT Secretary General at the same time dismissed Matiang’i over his intentions to change the entire education system, saying the government should not focus on education structure alone, but also invest in teacher education.

He threatened that the union may be forced to call for a nation-wide strike to press the CS to hire all the trained teachers who are still unemployed so as to curb the teacher shortage currently being experienced in Kenyan schools.

Four days ago, the Ministry of Education abolished mid-term breaks, prayers and visiting days during the third school term in a bid to contain cheating during the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

This was announced by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who assured Kenyans that the government is taking measures to guarantee credible national examinations from the end of this year.

Matiang’i also sternly warned any student, teacher or parent caught engaging in exam cheating that they will be dealt with individually, in measures that he said were backed by teachers unions’ Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

The CS also announced changes in the school calendar that will now see the Second Term extended to 12th August and Third Term begin on 29th August and end on 29th October.

This year’s KCSE exams will be conducted from 7th to 30th November while KCPE will start on 1st to 3rd November, with new exam body KNEC boss Mercy Kagoro assuring no cheating will be reported.
