Small scale traders reap big as Governor Mutua scraps levies

Machakos Governor, Dr. Alfred Mutua, has scrapped levies on small-scale businesses in a move expected to grow the local economy and improve livelihoods.

On Tuesday, June 27, Dr. Mutua directed the Department of Finance and Revenue Management in the county to stop collecting fees from hawkers, small-scale vegetable retailers (Mama Mboga), small-scale cereal vendors, mitumba traders, market cess for livestock, bus park fees for matatus, tuk tuks, and boda boda.

Speaking during a press conference in his office in Machakos, the Governor said the decision was aimed at protecting vulnerable business members of the county and growing the local economy.

Mutua also reduced license fees on single businesses charged on salons, shops, barber shops, shoe shiners, kiosks, and Mpesa.

The county boss promised small business owners that harassment would be a history in his government.

Dr Mutua said: “My Government shall not increase any fees on Single Business Permits. Any officer charging increased fees and or harassing traders should be reported for immediate disciplinary action,”

The governor said his county government is focused on development to better lives of the residents.

Some of his accomplished projects include Machakos Stadium that hosted the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, a 35-Acre park, water and infrastructure among others.

The Machakos Governor who is seeking a second term on a Maendeleo Chap Chap ticket, will be facing off with Wiper’s Wavinya Ndeti. A recent poll by a consortium of European Institutions interested in African politics show that he has an upper hand against Ndeti.

The polls peg Mutua at 66.1 percent against Wavinya who runs at 31.7 percent of votes in the County.

Machakos Deputy Governor Benard Kiala, who is running as an independent candidate, would garner 1.5 percent of the votes. Other polls have also predicted a Mutua win.
