Snakebites On The Increase In Wajir County

Between 2010-2013, at least 50 people died after being bitten by snakes.

According to the officer in Charge of Wildlife Conservation in Wajir, Zablon Omulako, more than 450 people were bitten during the same period.

During this year alone, 10 people are said to have died in snakebite related cases.

Omulako says that 50 cases of snakebites have been reported in the month of January, an issue he says is worrying.

Some of those who have been bitten by the dangerous snakes are said to have been crippled and are unable to walk due to toxic poison.

The officer explained that dry and excessive heat causes the snakes to come out at night and target their victims.

Abdi Muhumed, aged 44 years is a victim of the snakebites whose finger was bitten by one of the snakes in 2009.
