Society launches affordable houses project for Kenyans

Amid skyrocketing prices of prime land and property in the country, the provision of decent affordable housing especially for persons at the bottom of the economic pyramid remains a challenge.

In a bid to counter this challenge, a local housing cooperative, Urithi Housing Cooperative Society has launched a scheme that will help its members as well as members of the public borrow to own homes.

Samuel Maina, the chairman of Urithi Housing Co-Operative Society, says many Kenyans still have the aspirations of becoming home owners but are unable to realise their dreams due to the expensive nature of home loans.

The scheme dubbed “Urithi Premier Sacco” will also see the Sacco put up 100 homes every month in various parts of the country.

Urithi targets to build a total three thousand homes over that period to cater for the housing needs of people at various income levels.

The society has also unveiled plans to venture into the education sector by establishing the Urithi Group of Schools as a diversification plan.
