Soldier, two sons drown inside Thika Barracks

A father and his two sons died on Tuesday after they drowned in a quarry at the Thika Barracks.

Sergeant James Meme Kobia of 12 Engineers Thika Barracks had rushed to rescue his two sons; Joseph Githinji aged 11, and Vincent Muchui aged 7 years who had fallen inside the quarry.

Githinji and Muchui, according to the police, were playing around the murram excavation quarry when they slid and fell into the 30-foot deep pit located inside the KDF barracks grounds in Makongeni, Landless area.

Upon learning about his son’s predicament, Meme rushed to the scene and jumped into the quarry with a tyre to try and save the boys. The attempt was unsuccessful and ended with all three drowning inside the quarry.

KDF’s Disaster Response Unit from Nairobi was called in to help recover the bodies.
