Sonko asks court to dismiss election petition against him

Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, has asked the court to dismiss the election petition challenging his gubernatorial election victory.

A Nairobi resident, Japheth Muroko, petitioned the court to annul Nairobi gubernatorial race on the grounds that the election breached elections laws.

In his replying affidavit, the county boss has denied allegations that the process was marred with irregularities and illegalities as alleged by Mr Muroko.

The petitioner argues that unregistered people were allowed to vote, adding that there was no order of scrutiny of the ballot boxes and other election materials including KIEMS kit.

Sonko maintained that there were no inconsistencies in the counting and tallying of votes and that the process was carried out within the tenets of election laws.

“The votes in the said gubernatorial election for Nairobi County were counted at the respective polling stations in the presence of all candidates’ agents who were present,” said Sonko.

Sonko has listed down six issues that he wants the court to determine in the election petition against him among them whether the petitioner in the case has laid sufficient basis for scrutiny of the said election.

Meanwhile, Former Nairobi County Governor, Dr Evans Kidero, has made an application to court intending to be enjoined as an interested party to the petition.

Kidero argued that  if he is enjoined in the suit, he will make meaningful contributions to the case with additional concrete evidence including expansive unprecedented electoral malpractices and irregularities concerning the Nairobi County gubernatorial poll.
