Sonko keeps Nairobi waiting for new Deputy Governor

The year-long wait for a new Nairobi County Deputy Governor is set to drag on for another three weeks after Governor Mike Sonko failed to forward a name for approval as promised.
Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko had promised that he would name his new DG on Friday, January 11, 2019 but he changed citing ODM’s late push to have their candidate included in the final line up.
“This is to notify you that I was ready with the name of the nominee but I have received a request from the NASA coalition that in the spirit of the Handshake and subsequent cooperation with ruling coalition, that I should consider their proposed nominee Rahab Wangui for the position of Deputy Governor,” he told the media in Mombasa.
“This is to notify that I shall not be forwarding the name of my Deputy Governor nominee today to allow for further consultations. I will however nominate a suitable Deputy Governor at the earliest possible opportunity.”
When pressed further about the timeline on announcing his new deputy, Mr. Sonko said he will be ready with his nominee within two or three weeks.

“It will take a maximum of two, three weeks but I will comeback immediately I consult. This seat does not belong to Sonko, it’s a Jubilee seat, I have to consult widely, my party bosses, the President and DP and party leadership,” he said.
Sonko says he is looking for a competent and strong candidate to be his deputy while insisting that he will not tolerate laziness and corruption.
