Sonko to lead African cities in UN conference

Nairobi City Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been selected to lead African cities in the UN  General Assembly conference in New York on February 19.

A statement from the Governor’s Press Service said Sonko will be the only African leader who will be addressing the UN conference.

The meeting is organised by the Office of the President of the 73rd session of the General Assembly and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The theme of the conference is ”From Global Issues to Local Priorities.”

It will focus on the roles of cities in global agenda that include sustainable development, food security, nutrition and climate change.

Maria Fernanda Espinosa, the current UNGA President for the 73rd session, said: “The event will address global challenges from a local perspective and aims at giving a voice to cities through sharing of successful experience.”

Sonko has expressed his optimism that the international event will come with resolutions to help cities in third world countries develop a roadmap for sustainable development.
