Sonko opposes Bill to scrap Nairobi County

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has strongly opposed a Bill proposing to have the Nairobi County Government dissolved and put under the national government.

The Bill drafted by Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot wants the president to appoint a cabinet secretary who will be in charge of the national capital city.

Senator Cheruiyot argues that Nairobi being the seat of power and a cosmopolitan area requires better management, utilisation of resources and better planning, hence, should not be compared to other rural counties.

However, speaking on Thursday in Nairobi, Sonko dismissed the Kericho Senator’s arguments saying he should focus on his own county.

“He (Senator Cheruiyot) is acting within his constitutional rights but he should know that Nairobi has its own people and this is a complex matter that requires a referendum.

“He is the Kericho Senator, he cannot purport to be making a decision of for more than 5 million Nairobi residents,” said Sonko.

The Nairobi governor urged Senator Cheruiyot to focus on championing for devolution instead of pushing to have Nairobi delisted from the 47 counties:

The proposal comes at a time when the country is in a clamour for a referendum, and to have the amendment sail through, the country must be subjected to a vote.

The Bill was on Wednesday deliberated by the Senate Justice and Legal Affairs committee chaired by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargey.
