Sonko ordered to pay fine or face jail over MRC leader

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has been ordered to pay a fine of KSh100,000 within the next 14 days or face a six-month jail term for failing to produce Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) leader Omar Mwamnuadzi before the Mombasa Law Courts.

On November 1, 2012, the then Makadara MP came to the rescue of the MRC leader when he was arrested by submitting three land title deeds worth KSh14 million as surety to secure his release to give room for dialogue and promote peace. The MRC leader had been arrested alongside scores other top leaders of the outlawed sect.

In his ruling on Monday, June 12, Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia acknowledged the senator’s attendance of the court trials but noted that he has consistently failed to produce the MRC leader before the court, a condition set in the deal five years ago.

Sonko, who is now face-off with Nairobi Governor Kidero for the county’s top job in the August 8th General Election, told the court before that his efforts to trace the MRC leader have been futile even after hiring a private investigator.

Omar Mwanuadzi has been missing since April last year with his family claiming that he has been abducted by unknown party and could even have been killed already.
