Sonko picks vocal medic Bosire, former URP lawmaker Birdi in new Cabinet
Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has nominated five new County Executive Committee (CEC) members.
Lucia Mulwa was nominated to replace Janet Ouko as CEC for Education, Youth Gender Sports Culture and Social Services.
Ouko resigned four days ago claiming that the Governor intimidates and mistreats his staff.
Dr. Stella Bosire Otieno is to be the new CEC for Health, while Winfred Gathangu will be in charge of Finance and Economic Planning.
Others are Pauline Kaihiga Waititu (CEC Public Service Management and Devolution) and Sanjeev Kaur Sonia Birdi (Environment).
Birdi was a URP-nominated legislator in the last Parliament.
On Friday, Governor Sonko said the Nairobi County Government will be fully constituted as the other five CECs were previously vetted and have valid contracts.
“Kwa term ya kwanza, nilipeana mawaziri kandarasi ya mwaka moja moja. Sikua conversant na system za mawaziri, sikua nawajua wengine wao, nikawapea kandarasi ya mwaka moja moja (In my first term, I gave the CECs a one-year contract. I was not conversant with the Cabinet system and I did not know some of them very well and that is why I gave them a contract for only one year),” he added.
He further re-assigned the remaining CECs as follows: Mohammed Dagani (Roads Infrastructure and Transport), Allan Igambi (Trade Tourism and Cooperatives), Larry Wambua (CEC Agriculture and Water) and Newton Munene (CEC ICT, Communication and E-government).
Charles Kerich was however retained as the CEC Lands, Urban Planning, Urban Renewal and Housing.
This comes in the wake of pressure arising from a deemed crisis at the county government.
In October last year, the Nairobi County Public Service Board released a notice calling for applications for five CEC positions.
This was part of Governor Sonko’s move to replace sacked CECs and those whose contracts had expired.
