Sonko reveals Ken Okoth had a child out of wedlock

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday laid bare details of a love affair between the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth and Nairobi Member of County Assembly Anne Muthoni Thumbi, who moved to court to stop the deceased legislator’s funeral.

Speaking at the memorial service of the late MP at Moi Girl’s High School in Kibra, Sonko condemned the alleged exclusion of the nominated MCA and her three-year-old son from the funeral arrangements.

The Nairobi Governor strongly stated that the three-year-old child was the late Kibra MP’s son, hence, he should be embraced and allowed to be part of his father’s final send off.

“Ken had a son with one of the nominated Nairobi MCAs by the name Ann Thumbi alias Anita. The two love birds did not hide the fact that they shared a son. Ken recognised and was there for his son as demonstrated by pictures and various documented correspondences,” said Sonko.

“Unfortunately today, Anita was stopped at the Lee funeral home as she took their son to pay last respect to his father.Who does that?”

According to Sonko, the late Okoth and Ms. Muthoni met in 2013 during a medical camp hosted by the Sonko Rescue team in Kibra.

The Nairobi Governor says at the time, Ms. Muthoni was one of the ‘beautiful’ nurses working under the Sonko Rescue Team and she happened to catch Mr. Okoth’s eye.

“In 2013 Ken Okoth invited Sonko Rescue team to hold a medical camp for his constituents in Kibra. There were beautiful nurses and he fell in love with one of our nurses called Anita. And they began going out together. I can attest to that,” said Sonko.

“I’m urging that Okoth’s son be recognised. Anita together with her son even visited Ken Okoth’s mother who is here before us. They had happy moments and Ken loved his son. So it is not right to sideline this child.”

Sonko went ahead to reveal that he pushed for the nomination of Ms. Muthoni to the Nairobi County Assembly at the request of Mr. Okoth in 2017.

“In 2017 Ken told me to nominate his second wife Ann Thumbi to the Nairobi County Assembly. And since I have much respect for Ken Okoth who is lying before us here today, I nominated Ann Thumbi,” said Sonko.

The governor also disclosed he had organised for Ms. Muthoni to visit Mr. Okoth in Paris, where he was undergoing cancer treatment.

“She(Muthoni) appealed to me to help them fly to Paris to visit the ailing Ken after ambassador Judy Wakhungu posted a picture of the late MP in a Paris hospital. On the 6th I obliged to her appeal and asked them to send me copies of their passports. I proceeded to pay two tickets for the the two to travel and also booked a hotel in Paris,” said Sonko.

“Fortunately, a few days later, as we waited for their Visa processing , MCA Doris, a colleague of Anita, sent me a text saying Hon. Okoth had returned to Kenya but appeared very weak. Thus the Paris trip aborted.”

Sonko urged the MP’s family to allow the three-year-old be part of his father’s send off as a show of respect.

“My humble appeal is that even as we prepare to bury Ken, let’s not forget his son. He too needs and has a right to participate in the send off of his beloved dad… The family should accept
Hon. Okoth’s son enjoys legal protection and recognition,” said Sonko.

Meanwhile, a Nairobi court has barred the late MP’s family members from cremating or burying him pending hearing and determination of a case filed by Ms. Muthoni on behalf of the minor.

In the case, Ms. Muthoni has sued the late legislator’s mother Angeline Okoth, his Caucasian wife Monica Okoth and the Lee Funeral Home.

She insists that the three-year-old boy is a biological son of the late legislator, further claiming that the family has unilaterally decided to have Okoth’s body cremated so as to destroy any evidence of the minor’s lineage to the deceased.

The case was set for hearing on August 9, 2019.
