Sonko sends home top county official for traveling to the US

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has sent home the County Executive in charge of Devolution and Public Service Management, Ms. Veska Kangongo, for allegedly defying his orders not to travel out of the country.

Ms. Kangongo is accused of travelling to the United States on Friday June 1, 2018 yet Governor Sonko had apparently asked her not to proceed with the trip.

“It has come to attention of this office that you traveled to the United States on 1st June, 2018 having received express instructions from the Governor not to proceed with the trip prior to departure,” reads part of a letter addressed to Ms. Kangongo by the County Secretary, Peter Kariuki.

Ms. Kangongo was asked to vacate office immediately, and has been given seven days to submit her response over the matter.

“Your failure to obey lawful instructions from your appointing authority is tantamount to insubordination and therefore, you are hereby directed to step aside from your duties as County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Devolution and Public Service Management and proceed on leave pending provision of a satisfactory response as to why you traveled without express authority,” reads the letter.

It is not clear why the Governor had asked the Devolution CEC not to fly out of the country.

Ms. Kangongo was initially serving as the County Finance Executive before Governor did a Cabinet reshuffle, moving her to the Devolution docket. She was replaced with Danvas Makori who was previously in charge of the Agriculture, Livestock Development and Fisheries.
