Sonko summoned over missing MRC leader

Nairobi Senator Gidion Mbuvi alias Mike Sonko has been summoned to appear in court on September 23 to explain the whereabouts of outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) group leader, Omar Mwamnuadzi.

Sonko had been listed as a surety of Mwamnuadzi when he appeared before the court in November 2012.

The summons comes after Sonko failed to appear in court Tuesday despite having been ordered to do so two weeks ago.

Sonko’s lawyer, Jared Magolo, however, told the court that his client had not been officially served with the summons that was issued on August 15, 2016.

Mwamnuadzi was arrested by police in Kombani area, Kwale County with other MRC suspects in October 2012 and is facing charges of being in possession of a firearm and several rounds of ammunition.

The MRC leader has failed to show up in court several times claiming he was sick, a matter that was opposed by prosecution.

The order to have Nairobi Senator appear in court was issued by Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti.
