Sonko suspends official who allegedly approved South End Mall

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has suspended a county official who is alleged to have approved two buildings constructed on riparian land in the city.

Mr. John Ojwang, an employee in the Urban Planning Department, was sent home for allegedly granting permission for the construction of the South End Mall at the Langata Road-Mbagathi Way Junction, and for Gem Suits in Riverside estate.

The multi-billion South End Mall, owned by former Bobasi MP Stephen Manoti, was demolished last Wednesday for standing atop Mutuini-Ngong River.

“Mr Ojwang has been issued with a notice to show cause within 14 days why disciplinary action should not be taken against him, including termination of employment,” reads a press release from Sonko’s office.

“The suspension follows preliminary investigations ordered by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to hold responsible the staff who gave the approvals irregularly.”

Governor Sonko, however, noted that most of the approvals of buildings on Nairobi’s wetlands were given in the 1980s and 1990s mainly by staff who have since retired or left City Hall.

Meawhile, the Nairobi Governor says more buildings are marked for demolition, for being illegally built on riparian land which Article 67 of the Constitution states is public land.
