Sonko’s infamous lions removed from City Hall

Lion statues that Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had commissioned for his City Hall office have been removed.

Citizen TV has established that the figurines were defaced on Tuesday evening by unknown persons.

This comes a day after Sonko signed a deal at State House to transfer key operations to the national government.

The lion figurines had been erected outside City Hall last year in what the flamboyant county boss claimed would make the city beautiful again.

Sonko had two of these lion "statues" placed outside County Hall. They're hollow and the hair is "real".

On Wednesday morning however, the figurines were spotted on top of a truck leaving City Hall in what is almost symbolic of Sonko’s looming exit from the helm of the capital city.

Sonko is battling a Ksh.357million graft case and was also dealt a blow on Wednesday when the court declined to throw out the case.

In March 2019, Sonko was the butt-end of odd jokes after commissioning another set of figurines on University Way.

Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) castigated the Governor terming the figurines as ‘ugly’ and ’embarassing’ for a capital city.

This forced Sonko to have them replaced in the dead of the night: Kenyans woke up to a whole new set of statues.

The county government would later claim that the ‘ugly lion’ was an incomplete project, and the artist working on it had gone on a break.
