Sossion reacts to his suspension as KNUT secretary general

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) boss Wilson Sossion insists that he is the secretary general of the teachers union despite his suspension by the body’s executive council.

In a majority vote, the KNUT National Executive Committee on Monday voted 22 against 2 members to suspend Sossion, and appointed his deputy, Hesbon Otieno to take over in an acting capacity.

However, speaking during the Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Park grounds in Nairobi, Sossion, who was dressed in a branded KNUT t-shirt downplayed his dismissal saying he is still the union’s duly-elected leader.

“I am the Secretary General of KNUT, duly elected by the teachers of Kenya,” said Sossion.

However, addressing the media after Sossion’s address at Uhuru Park, KNUT Chairman Wycliffe Omucheyi said Monday’s move to suspend Sossion was anchored on the union’s constitution.

He asked Sossion, who is also a nominated Member of Parliament, to respect the council’s decision and step aside.

Omucheyi accused Sossion of disrespecting the NEC’s decision to suspend him on two occasions last month, saying they have a right to take disciplinary action against any member.
