South Sudan finally joins East African Community

South Sudan becomes the sixth country to be admitted into the East African Community (EAC), joining its neighbours; Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during the 17th Ordinary EAC Heads of State and Government Summit in Arusha, Tanzania.

The entry of South Sudan into the East African Community will go a long way in helping consolidate the economic stability of the region through trade.

South Sudan made the application to join the regional bloc in 2011 after gaining independence though the process has been slow due to political instability in the world’s newest country.

South Sudan President Salva Kiir announced last month the formation of a transition government of national unity with his rival Dr. Riek Machar as his vice resident.

Meanwhile, Liberat Mfumukeko of Burundi has been appointed new EAC Secretary General effectively taking over from Dr. Richard Sezibera of Rwanda.
