South Sudan Foes Sign Peace Deal

The two rivals agreed to end the fighting by signing the Cessation of Hostilities Treaty during the 26th Summit on South Sudan in Addis Ababa,  Ethiopia.

The government of South Sudan is therefore expected to forge a transitional government within the 60 days deadline.

US envoy to South Sudan Donald Booth said the talks offered the last, best chance for the warring parties to prove their commitment to holding their nation and their people together.

The IGAD regional bloc has threatened tough sanctions if the two rivals fail to abide by the agreement.

Previous deals to end the fighting had been broken by both parties.

The fighting began in December after Salvar Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup.

Machar however denied the allegations, marshaling a rebel army to fight the government.

According to the UN, millions of people in South Sudan are at risk of starvation.

South Sudan is the world’s youngest nation after it gained its independence in 2011 from Sudan.
